My Approach to Counseling
Many of us grow up thinking that we are not good enough in some way, that we are fundamentally flawed, that there is something wrong with us. My intention will be to create an atmosphere in which you can be completely authentic and learn that you are perfect just the way you are. I will do that by being authentic with you and be totally present and engaged with you in our sessions.
Many of us grow up thinking that we are not good enough in some way, that we are fundamentally flawed, that there is something wrong with us. I believe we need to accept the things about ourselves that we cannot change and identify those things we would like to change about ourselves and then work at changing them. We need to do this in a gentle and kind way. Beating ourselves up does not help.
I believe that we can retrain our minds to interpret our experiences in more positive and productive ways. I believe that being anxious and worrying are normal feelings in life and learning to deal with them in our sessions will lead to learning to deal with them in other parts of your life. I believe that anxiety can be linked back to feelings of unworthiness and the fear that we will not be able to deal appropriately with situations that we encounter in our lives.
When I work with individuals it is my intention to create an atmosphere in which you can be comfortable and authentic and share anything that comes up for you in the session. It may take some time for you to trust this process and I will be patient. It is important that your therapy proceed at a pace that you are comfortable with. My goal is to be authentic, present and engaged with you.
I believe that we all need to feel connected with other people in our lives and that for most of us it is important to have one significant other. It is important to discover what is underneath the struggles that we get into. An argument about which way the toilet paper goes on the roll is not really about toilet paper. We bring all our individual struggles into our interactions with others. In that way couples counseling is also individual counseling. I have some good resources that you can use to learn to relate in a healthy way in your relationship.
I am interested in the things that we face as we get older and would like to help my senior clients deal with them. I am uniquely qualified as I am a Senior Citizen myself and am dealing with what it is like to grow old.
